Matthew Broderick Pays Tribute to Lion King Co-Star James Earl Jones: "My Father, My King!"

Matthew Broderick, who voiced Simba in the beloved Lion King films, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his on-screen father, James Earl Jones, following the legendary actor’s death on September 9 at the age of 93.

In an exclusive statement to NEWS FAST LINE, Broderick expressed his deep admiration and affection for Jones, who played Mufasa, Simba’s father, in the 1994 animated film and its sequel, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.

“I’m so lucky to have had a chance to work with James Earl Jones. To have had him play my father, my king! And to get to know him a little bit,” Broderick, 62, shared. “I’d cross paths with him from time to time over the years and I was always so thrilled to see him.”

Reflecting on their interactions, Broderick described Jones as “so open” and fondly remembered his “broad grin, lots of laughter, and genuine curiosity about others.” Despite Jones’ commanding, kingly voice, Broderick noted that his Lion King co-star was a “great listener” with a warmth and humility that stood in contrast to his formidable on-screen persona.

Broderick also praised Jones’ diverse career, citing his powerful and moving performance in Fences as one of his favorites. “His brilliant, frightening, heartbreaking performance in Fences might be my favorite, but there are so many great performances in that long, magnificent career it’s impossible to choose a favorite,” he added. “One of the very best of his or any generation. A great American actor.”

James Earl Jones’ portrayal of Mufasa in The Lion King became one of his most cherished roles, teaching generations of viewers about love, leadership, and fatherhood. Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, directors of the groundbreaking film, remembered Jones as an irreplaceable talent. “His portrayal of Mufasa was absolute perfection, teaching a generation what fatherhood is all about,” said Minkoff. “He lives in all of us.”

Jim Cummings, who voiced the character Ed the hyena in The Lion King, also paid tribute to Jones by sharing a photo and a recording booth clip on Instagram Stories. Like many, Cummings recognized the profound impact Jones had on his fellow actors and fans alike.

Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the legacy Jones left behind in a statement, noting that he voiced “some of the greatest characters in cinema history.” Iger highlighted Jones’ unparalleled contribution to film, theater, and animation, saying, “The stories he brought to life with a uniquely commanding presence and a true richness of spirit have left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.”

Jones, whose career spanned six decades and included nearly 200 film and television credits, left a lasting legacy not only in Hollywood but in the hearts of his co-stars and fans worldwide. As Broderick put it, James Earl Jones was truly “one of the very best.”

On behalf of Disney, Iger extended condolences to Jones’ family, including his son, Flynn Earl Jones, and loved ones. “He lives in all of us,” Minkoff poignantly stated—an apt tribute to a man whose voice will continue to echo through the generations.
