The Grammy-winning Christian singer who rose to fame on “American Idol,” Mandisa passed away at the age of 47 in her Nashville residence on Thursday.
A spokesperson confirmed the sad news to The Tennessean, stating, “We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Christian radio network K-Love also paid tribute to the gospel and contemporary Christian artists.

“Mandisa loved Jesus, and she never missed a chance to talk about Him. David Pierce, who works at K-Love, said she was incredibly kind, always smiling, and had a powerful voice. But what stood out was her big heart. Mandisa went through tough times, and she was brave enough to talk about it openly. This helped others open up about their struggles too. Now, Mandisa’s struggles are over, and she’s with God. While we feel sad, we know she’s in a better place. Let’s pray for Mandisa’s family and friends, and we hope you’ll join us.”
Mandisa, whose full name is Mandisa Lynn Hundley, auditioned for the fifth season of “American Idol” in 2005. She gained popularity when the show aired in 2006 and became a favorite among viewers. Mandisa made it to the top nine contestants before she was eliminated. Throughout her time on the show, she performed songs like “I’m Every Woman,” “I Don’t Hurt Anymore,” “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” “Any Man of Mine,” “Shackles (Praise You),” and many others.
Following her success on “American Idol,” Mandisa launched her debut album, “True Beauty,” in 2007. It made history by debuting at the top of Billboard’s Christian album chart, marking the first time a female artist achieved this feat. Additionally, it entered the overall Billboard 200 chart at No. 43. Her initial single from the album, “Only the World,” debuted impressively at No. 2 on the Hot Singles chart and climbed to the No. 1 spot in its second week.

Mandisa released several albums throughout her career, including “It’s Christmas” (2008), “Freedom” (2009), “What if We Were Real” (2011), “Overcomer” (2013), and “Out of the Dark” (2017), along with a greatest hits album in 2020. She received Grammy nominations for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for both “True Beauty” and “Freedom,” as well as for Contemporary Christian Music Album with “What if We Were Real.” Her first Grammy win came with “Overcomer,” which earned her a trophy for Contemporary Christian Album, and she also received another nomination for Gospel/Contemporary Christian Performance for the title track.
Mandisa was among only five “American Idol” alumni to win a Grammy, alongside Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Tori Kelly.
